From Pike Place Market to the World
Our story began in 1971 along the cobblestone streets of Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. It was here that Starbucks opened its first store, offering fresh-roasted whole beans, fragrant teas, and spices from around the globe.
Named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, Starbucks evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. From those modest beginnings, our mission was simple: bring exceptional coffee and personal connection to everyday life.

Great coffee begins at the source. We work closely with coffee farming families across Latin America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific to ethically cultivate 100% Arabica beans under C.A.F.E. (Coffee and Farmer Equity) Practices.
Our master roasters apply decades of craftsmanship to bring out each bean’s distinct aroma, acidity, body, and flavor notes — whether it is the bright citrus of Blonde Roasts, the balanced cocoa of Pike Place®, or the smoky sweetness of French Roast.
